A Kylebits Revival
I first set up this blog when I was moving from Boston to Dallas and I wanted a way to keep my friends and family up to date on what’s going on. It seems appropriate, then, that I start blogging again as I move from one place to another within the Dallas area.
Anyone reading this blog must know by now that Laura and I are getting a divorce. As a result, I’m moving out of the house we bought just over 1 year ago, into an apartment in Las Colinas. The cats are coming with me, so I hope they’re up for another moving adventure.
I’m not happy about the divorce. I believe that all marriages have some up front difficulty, especially during periods of stress … and boy did we hit all the big stressors: Laura graduated law school, took the bar, started a new job. We moved in together and bought a house together. I quit my job and started a new company. The new company took me out of town full time for 5 months. That’s a lot of stuff to put up with, so I believe some conflict is unavoidable. We went to counseling, and while I wasn’t really a big fan of that, I think we were making some progress. Despite this knowledge and our progress, Laura’s depression got the best of her and she decided to end the marriage.
Some statistics I’ve heard that may or may not be true: While the national divorce rate is around 45%, the rate in Dallas is around 75%. Attorneys are more likely than most other professionals to end up divorced. If one or both spouses are depressed, you are 9 times more likely to get a divorce. It seems like I should have known this was coming, huh? If those stats are even close to real, I never really had a chance.
Thursday is moving day … more to come.
