As usual, it’s Paco‘s fault. Two years ago, when I saw a notebook he bought for Linux, I couldn’t resist and I bought one. Now, my latest toy is his fault too. It occurs to me that I used to be on the bleeding edge with toys but now I’m not anymore. I’m glad I have Paco to keep me buying stuff!
XBox Live updated
I just updated my XBox Live account to work with 360, and I changed my gamertag to be KyleBits. If you want to add me and your tag isn’t obvious who you are, please email me to let me know who the invite is coming from!
Christmas in the new Davis household
Christmas came a little late this year. Ok, that’s not entirely true, since my family got me some spiffy DVDs and CDs from my Amazon wishlist, and they came on time. But, every year there’s one present — the present that makes Christmas, and I just bought it for myself yesterday. Amazingly, it’ll arrive today. Yes, in a few hours, I’ll have an XBox 360.
SBC update
I threw ‘em out. Well, the one part of them I could throw out, anyway. I ordered DirectTV and they put an HD dish on my balcony. So, that’s one problem solved. I really have no choice but to keep SBC for the DSL line and the landline (which the dish needs). So, I’ll grudgingly keep them, but I reserve the right to bitch about them!
I hate SBC
SBC has an exclusive contract with my apartment complex to provide phone, DSL, and cable (DirecTV, actually). No other vendor can come in, other than the satellite providers if you want to put an antenna on your balcony. This stranglehold on the complex is unfortunate (and should be illegal, in my opinion!) because no matter how bad their customer service is, the customer is stuck.
Publishing
I figured out the problem with MovableType (the program I use to create this blog), so now I’ll be able to post the entries I’ve been saving up … coming shortly. It’s been hard to work on it, since I don’t have DSL in the apartment yet. Stay tuned for my rant about SBC.
The new place
In my hunt for an apartment, I discovered I had 2 choices for living in Irving or Dallas: pay more money than I really wanted to, or live in a shithole. There really isn’t any middle ground. Not that the apartments here are all that expensive, but now that I’m consulting instead of working a full time job with a guaranteed paycheck, I thought it would be a good idea to keep costs down.
A Kylebits Revival
I first set up this blog when I was moving from Boston to Dallas and I wanted a way to keep my friends and family up to date on what’s going on. It seems appropriate, then, that I start blogging again as I move from one place to another within the Dallas area.
Google Arrogance??
This article from the Wall Street Journal talks about Yahoo!’s new webmail client, comparing it to Google’s Gmail. Now, I don’t care one bit about Yahoo!’s new stuff, because Gmail does what I need it to do. But, I’m struck by this quote: “But I’m not sure Google’s arrogance will ever make room for user preferences.”
What a dork. It’s funny how creating a disruptive technology that everyone loves and growing to be a giant will suddenly make people turn on you. Google has to be just about the coolest company on the planet, cranking out cool toy after cool toy, and turning them over to the Internet at large for free. They’ve been the media darling for ever, and no geek would be caught dead without the add-ins for either Firefox or Internet Explorer installed on their machine. So, why this sudden negativity? Google got where they are by by producing stuff that is simple, easy to use, and just works. That’s arrogance?
Sadler and Carter Summer Shootout
Yesterday I played in the Summer Shootout, hosted by Sadler and Carter Poker, a local poker supplier that also builds custom poker tables. Periodically, they host games at their store to showcase their equipment. We play on their custom tables, with the same chips they sell.
I hadn’t been to S&C for a game in a while, and the first thing I noticed was a decorating change. Several walls are adorned with pictures of Steve Carter from WSOP 2005 event #22 (which also happens to be the PSO Invitational) where he finished 7th. The last time I was in the store, Steve was telling me about Ray Sadler’s success crushing Poker333’s sit-n-go’s. Clearly I’m up against some tough competition.
